On another page, I have written the ‘why and how’ about my work in schools and with youth groups. On this page is an outline of the ‘what’.
I am based in Devon, UK, and available for work throughout the South West UK and sometimes beyond. I work as a solo practitioner, or in collaboration with others, in schools and with youth groups.
I can work with any age group, subject, issue or genre.
I can design sessions to enhance and support current projects and learning needs, and for developing specific areas of curricula. For example, understanding of other cultures, links with the community, literacy, or extending opportunities for more able students, or less able students.
As a freelancer, I hold Enhanced Disclosure, and full Public Liability Insurance via the National Association of Writers in Education.
I have an ongoing project called write-act that offers a range of ‘off the peg’ tried and tested project models. write-act is a collaborative project with storyteller, actor and educator Sara Hurley. Our menu of projects and workshops are on our website, which is is almost ready for publication - hopefully by mid November 2011
We offer courses in playwriting and devising, performance poetry, storytelling, and creative writing.
- How we book a session
To begin, please contact me at lucy.write.act@mail.com
do have a look at write-act at www.write-act.co.uk for set projects and ideas to adapt.
I begin coming to your establishment and meeting the director, teacher, or head teacher an then discuss required outcomes, methods to suit, available time and space, issues, resources, and learners.
We agree on how to proceed, put the plan in writing and agree on that, and begin. I work for sessions as short as a couple of hours or within extensive projects over weeks or months.
Or discuss your ideas first: Please contact me to discuss your learners needs, your ideas, and hopefully we can arrange something to suit mutual availability for good value. I charge Arts Council Rates which are currently £180 per day or £90 per half day or part thereof. Sometimes extra costs or discounts can affect this, depending on circumstances such as your location, or confirmed block bookings .
ideas might include: finding words and narratives in landscapes – planning for school plays and pageants – developing scripts – sessions for more able learners – fun with language – developing rhyme – writing poems for display or publication – poetry and spoken word – poetry for performance and slam competition – inter-school projects and performances -
“An enjoyable and stimulating session for reluctant and struggling writers”. - Anna Mills, year 5/6 teacher, Pennycross Primary
“I was extremely impressed with Lucy’s control of 38 excited children. Her dramatic method of eliciting words from the children was extremely effective and she used praise and encouragement throughout the session.” - Class Teacher Yr 3/4, Meavy C of E Primary School, Devon
“I was extremely pleased and impressed with the way in which Lucy approached the workshops, providing a well structured session which left room for creative exploration by the children. The children engaged well throughout the sessions (despite a wide variance in abilities) and Lucy was able to provide a flexible response to the differing needs to each group and individual children.” - Dr. Jo Mayes, ‘The Leats Project’ funded by Plymouth Youth Partnerships Agenda 21 for 4 Devon Schools
